How to read it
The first two digits give the year. Everything after that is a production sequence and encodes nothing: no day, no month, no plant, no model.
A serial of 190019331 reads as 2019. A serial of 230054321 reads as 2023. That is the whole method.

What was lost in the change
The eight-digit format gave an exact day and, for older instruments, a plant. The nine-digit format gives a year. That is a real reduction in what a serial can tell you, and it is worth understanding if you are used to dating Gibsons precisely.
It also removed the built-in error check. The old format's day-of-year field had to be a real date, which caught mis-typed serials immediately. A nine-digit number has no such constraint — any nine digits starting with a plausible year will decode, so a transcription error can produce a confident-looking result that is simply wrong.

Telling the two formats apart
Count the digits. Eight digits is the 1977–2013 format and is read by splitting the year across positions one and five. Nine digits is the 2014-onwards format and is read straight off the front.
- Eight digits, first and fifth read as 77–99 or 00–13: the older interleaved format.
- Nine digits, first two read as 14 or higher: the current format.
- A CS prefix: a Custom Shop instrument, on its own numbering.
- Five digits: most likely a Custom Shop Historic reissue.

- Can a nine-digit Gibson serial tell me the month it was made?

- Gibson's Bozeman acoustic operation and the Custom Shop have used their own conventions alongside the main sequence. If a nine-digit reading looks wrong for an acoustic, check the label inside the soundhole and any accompanying paperwork.
