How Gibson numbering works
Gibson's eight-digit serial number is unusual among guitar makers because it encodes an exact day rather than just a year. The catch is that the digits are interleaved: the year is split across the first and fifth characters, with the day of the year sitting between them. Read the number left to right as a date and you will get nonsense.
That interleaving is also why Gibson serials are unusually good at catching transcription errors. If the middle three digits do not form a real day of the year, the number has been mis-read — the format has a built-in checksum that most manufacturers' serials lack.
Gibson has run several numbering systems in parallel throughout its history. Custom Shop instruments, Historic Collection reissues and Bozeman-built acoustics have all used their own conventions alongside the main production sequence, so the first question to settle is which system you are looking at.

- Reading the number as a straightforward date. The year is split across two non-adjacent digits.
- Assuming a five-digit number on a Les Paul reissue is a production sequence — it is a Custom Shop number whose first digit is the year.
- Treating the ranking digits as a plant code on any instrument made after 1984.
- Expecting a Bozeman-built acoustic to follow the same conventions as a Nashville electric.

Acoustic production moved to Bozeman, Montana in 1989, after which instrument type is a better guide to the plant than the ranking digits.

A Gibson can carry more than one number. The serial is normally on the back of the headstock; a number stamped inside the body or in the neck pocket is more likely a factory order number.

- How do I find the year of my Gibson from the serial number?
- For an eight-digit serial, combine the first and fifth digits to get the year: 7 and 8 give 1978. Digits two to four are the day of that year. From 2014 the serial is nine digits and the first two digits are the year. Enter the number above and it will be read for you, with the reasoning shown.
- Where is the serial number on a Gibson guitar?
- Stamped or impressed into the back of the headstock on almost all instruments since 1977, usually with MADE IN USA below it. On acoustics, look at the label or the neck block through the soundhole. On older hollow and semi-hollow instruments it is printed on the orange oval label visible through the f-hole.
- What do the last three digits of a Gibson serial mean?
- Until 1984 they were a plant ranking number: 001 to 499 indicated Kalamazoo and 500 to 999 indicated Nashville. After the Kalamazoo plant closed the split stopped identifying a plant, and from 2005 the digits indicate a production batch instead.
- My Gibson serial number will not decode. What is wrong?
- Most often a transcription error. The middle three digits have to form a real day of the year, so a value like 999 or 000 means the number has been mis-read. Check for a letter O entered as a zero or a 1 read as a 7. It may also be a factory order number rather than a serial, or a Custom Shop number on its own system.
- Does a valid Gibson serial number mean the guitar is genuine?
- No. Gibson's serial formats are published, so a counterfeit will normally carry a plausible or directly copied number. A serial that decodes cleanly is consistent with a genuine instrument but is not evidence that one is. Authentication requires physical examination of construction, hardware, date codes and finish.
